If there is one thing I have learned in HR, it is that employment law is rarely black and white.
I have worked in organisations that avoided risk at all costs, refusing to make a move without external legal advice. I have also seen the opposite, with businesses so reckless they’d walk into a tribunal with nothing but misplaced confidence and a poorly drafted contract, hoping for the best.
… and somewhere in the middle of all that sits the majority of HR folk, navigating legal grey areas, second guessing advice, and trying to balance commercial decisions with compliance.
I know this because I have been there too (and still am at times). Early in my career, I would spend hours double checking my interpretation of case law before advising a manager, worried that one wrong word could land us in hot water. I am not alone. Many HR professionals, especially those without a legal background, feel this constant pressure to “get it right” without always having clear cut answers. It is a balancing act, staying compliant while also being pragmatic enough to keep the business moving forward.
That is exactly why I started Legally HR, not because I have all the answers but because I wanted a space to collect, simplify, and share the key takeaways I wish I had. I haven’t found a one stop shop for tribunal cases, legal updates, and friendly explanations that isn’t in an expensive hardcover format or requires subscription, so I figured, why not to start one?
So, who am I?
I am not a lawyer, just an HR professional with a genuine interest in employment law and a habit of reading tribunal cases for fun (trust me – you will not need melatonin after you read a few!).
I do not claim to be an expert but I believe that understanding case law and legal trends makes us better HR professionals, helping us advise with more confidence.
Think of me as the Elle Woods of HR, enthusiastic, still learning, but always ready to break things down into practical takeaways.
And if you do not get the Elle Woods reference, watch Legally Blonde. You will thank me later.

Quick heads up – the legal bit
While I enjoy making sense of employment law, this blog isn’t a substitute for professional legal advice. Always consult a qualified expert when needed.
My goal here is to demystify employment law, helping you grasp workplace rights and navigate HR challenges with a bit more clarity.
